About Us
Monte Medeiros is the result of the determination, passion and dedication of it `s owner. Having visited the Serpa / Pias region, António A. Figueira de Chaves decided to change, sold his business in the city and planted the vineyards in this estate.
Located in the historical wine region of Moura / Alentejo with ideal climate and soil, it is as well a natural sanctuary for birds and other animals. The family is not only dedicated to producing the best wine possible, but it strives to protect and mantain the natural surroundings and wilderness of the place. In it ´s two water dams one can find fish, turtles, otlers, crabfish and a large variety of birds such as duck, teal, stork, woodpigeon, doves, quail, cormoran and many other species.
Vineyard
Currently we have 30 hectares of vineyards, 16 with Aragonez ( Tempranillo ), 6 Touriga Nacional, 4,5 of Cabernet Sauvignon and 3,5 Shyraz. We try to obtain better leaf exposure and airing using the espaldera system taking full advantage of our climate.
Our vineyards enjoys special controls by area drop to drop irrigation systems from our own water dams and wells.
Our Cellar
These last four years have seen the construction of the cellar in a restored 200 year old ruined barn, this makes it a unique landmark. It was designed with great care in order to handle our greatest treasure, “grapes”.
During the harvest the grapes are selected and handpicked in small boxes and arrive on the premises to go directly into tanks. Then during fermentation process, temperature is controlled through cold water showers. We search for the maximum fruit expression through maceration and the gentle crushing in low capacity pneumatic press. Wine then sleeps for the time needed to gain structure without losing its personality and identity. Finally it aged and matured in french oak barrels, and bottled .
